Water a Source of Life
- By George Otte
As a professional water engineer and a Maryknoll Lay Missioner it is challenging to be in a country with so many water-related problems. Outbreaks of waterborne diseases, like cholera, are all too common especially during the dry season when the options for reliable and safe supplies are limited, generally expensive and often way out of the reach of the people that are in need.
In the past year I have visited and worked at five secondary schools (each with a capacity for 600 students) all with varying degrees of problems that hinge on the lack of adequate, safe water.
Project renamed “HOPE”
- By Mary Oldham
The project that Mary Oldham works in was called AIDS Orphans Project. Due to the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, it was decided to give the project a name that doesn't include the disease that has affected the children's families. The project has now been renamed to HOPE: Helping Orphans Pursue Education.
Struggling for Life in Tanzania
- By Joanne Miya
The Uzima Center located in Mwanza, Tanzania has two main programs: one for orphans and vulnerable children, the other for adults and children living with HIV/AIDS. In order for services to be available to those in need, there are several things that have to come together. Obviously funding is necessary in order for us to be able to provide medicine, food, school uniforms, books, etc. What many people forget is that it takes a committed staff to make all these services happen.
